Soenes Roti Bar & Grill: A Must-Visit for Surinamese Food Lovers in Amsterdam

Some restaurants stay on your must-visit list for way too long, and Soenes Roti Bar & Grill was one of those for me. This spot has been calling my name with its promise of authentic Surinamese flavors, grilled specialties, and comforting dishes. I finally made my way there, and let me tell you—it was definitely worth the visit!

The Menu – A Surinamese Feast

At Soenes Roti Bar & Grill, you’ll find a great selection of Surinamese favorites. Whether you’re craving something grilled, fried, or packed with spice, they have you covered. Some of their standout options include:

  • Grilled meats like lamb, chicken wings, and more
  • Surinamese classics such as roti, nasi, bami, and bara’s
  • Savory sides that complement every meal
  • Surinamese drinks, including my personal favorite—Markoesa (passion fruit juice)

For those who enjoy a drink with their meal, they also serve red wine, white wine, soft drinks, and alcoholic options.

What We Ordered

Since this was my first visit, I wanted to get a good mix of flavors and textures. Here’s what we tried:

🥘 Nasi with Chicken

For this dish, you get to choose between regular chicken or chicken fillet. I decided to go with the regular chicken, and I have no regrets. This dish was everything you want from a comforting plate of Surinamese food—the chicken was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor, and the nasi itself was incredibly tasty. Each bite had the right balance of seasoning, making it a truly satisfying meal. If you’re a fan of nasi, this is a must-try!

🥩 Lamb Kotelets with Fries

Next, we tried the lamb kotelets, which came with fries. While the seasoning was on point and the flavor was definitely there, the texture of the lamb was a bit too flat, which led to it being slightly overcooked. It was still enjoyable, but compared to the nasi and chicken, it wasn’t my favorite dish of the evening. The fries were a nice addition, adding a bit of crunch to the meal.

What’s Next on My List?

Even though we had a great meal, I can’t wait to go back and try some of their other dishes. Roti and bara’s are two Surinamese staples that I expect will be just as delicious as the nasi. If they’re anything like the dishes I had, they’ll be full of flavor and cooked to perfection.

The Atmosphere

The restaurant itself looks neat, clean, and well-maintained, almost as if it had just opened. It has a fresh and inviting vibe, making it a great place to sit down and enjoy a meal. Whether you’re dining in or grabbing food to go, the experience feels well put together.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a fan of Surinamese food, Soenes Roti Bar & Grill is definitely worth a visit. The flavors are on point, the variety is great, and the atmosphere makes it a pleasant place to eat. While the lamb wasn’t my favorite, the nasi and chicken were absolutely delicious, and I’m already looking forward to my next meal there.
