Sando Café | 8.5

Tucked away in the picturesque streets of Utrecht, Sando is a hidden treasure that’s gaining popularity among food enthusiasts and locals alike. Drawing inspiration from the acclaimed Chun in Amsterdam, Sando Cafe brings a slice of Tokyo’s vibrant food scene to this charming Dutch city. Despite its petite size, this cafe offers an unforgettable blend of delectable flavors and a cozy, inviting atmosphere.

As you step into Sando Cafe, the first thing that strikes you is its intimate and welcoming ambiance. With just two benches and two tables, the cafe’s small dimensions enhance its charm, making visitors feel like they’ve discovered a well-kept secret—a little pocket of Tokyo nestled within Utrecht’s heart.

The highlight of the Sando Cafe experience is undoubtedly the “Sando,” a Japanese-style sandwich with a unique twist. Sando Cafe boasts a variety of Sando options, each offering a delightful culinary adventure. During our visit, we had the pleasure of trying two of their most popular offerings: the Beef Bulgogi Sando and the Soy Garlic Chicken Sando. To put it simply, both were outstanding.

The Beef Bulgogi Sando got tender slices of marinated beef, expertly grilled to perfection, were lovingly sandwiched between two slices of toasted bread. Each bite was delightful, leaving us craving more.

Our journey continued with the Soy Garlic Chicken Sando—a true crowd-pleaser. Crispy, succulent chicken pieces were generously coated in a velvety soy garlic sauce, creating a contrast between the crispy outside and the juicy, flavorful inside. This Sando achieved a balance of savory and sweet notes, with a garlicky kick.

Beyond the culinary delights, Sando Cafe’s interior is an artful masterpiece in its own right. While the cafe may be compact, its decor is a testament to creativity and attention to detail. with paintings on the walls and even extending to the ceiling, the decor elevates the overall experience. It’s a visually captivating and inviting space that adds to the pleasure of your visit.

If there was one minor letdown during our experience at Sando Cafe, it was the cheddar “cheese” on the sandwich. While everything else was impeccable, the cheese didn’t quite live up to our expectations. We had hoped for a gooey, melted cheese sensation but found it to be more like a cold slice. Nevertheless, this minor flaw didn’t overshadow the overall excellence of our meal.

In conclusion, Sando Cafe in Utrecht offers a delightful culinary journey to the flavors of Tokyo within a cozy and intimate setting. From the mouthwatering Beef Bulgogi Sando to the irresistible Soy Garlic Chicken Sando, the Sandos are a genuine culinary delight. Despite the cheese disappointment, Sando Cafe remains a must-visit for those seeking a unique and delicious dining experience. When you find yourself in Utrecht, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the wonderful fusion of flavors and the welcoming ambiance that awaits you at this charming corner of culinary paradise.
