Restaurant RJ | 8.3

Nestled beside the iconic Fire Tower in De Cocksdorp, Restaurant RJ offers a high-end dining experience that combines exquisite flavors with impeccable service. Known for its innovative dishes and exceptional wagyu options, RJ is a destination for food enthusiasts seeking a memorable meal on Texel.

A Menu to Savor

At Restaurant RJ, you can choose between à la carte dining, a 3- to 7-course menu, or a 3- to 7-course menu featuring premium Wagyu A5 BMS+. Naturally, we couldn’t resist indulging in the wagyu experience, and it truly lived up to the hype.

A Unique Start

While we initially booked our reservation for Friday, the staff kindly contacted us to shift it to Saturday, as no other bookings were made for Friday. This small adjustment set the tone for a highly personalized experience.

Upon arrival, we were the first guests in the restaurant, and the chef personally greeted us with the wagyu itself—an unexpected but delightful touch. Having the meat brought to our table and hearing the chef explain its quality and preparation added an interactive element to the evening.

Pairing Perfection

RJ’s extensive wine list is a treasure trove for wine lovers, featuring an impressive selection from around the world. After much deliberation, we chose a 100% Tempranillo, and it turned out to be an excellent pairing for our courses, enhancing every bite.

The Courses

Each dish at RJ is crafted with care and precision, showcasing the chef’s expertise and attention to detail.

  • Amuse: The evening began with a serving of fresh brioche, butter, and a duck liver amuse—rich and flavorful, setting the bar high from the start.
  • Pumpkin Dish: This was a standout for its creativity and depth of flavor.
  • Tuna Tartare: The tuna was exceptionally fresh, and for my boyfriend, who prefers meat over fish, the steak tartare was deemed the best he’s ever had.
  • Red Mullet with Carrots: This dish impressed with its vibrant flavors and inventive carrot preparations.
  • Main Options: While I had the tarbot with miso, my boyfriend’s dish was switched to lamb, showcasing the kitchen’s flexibility. Both dishes were impeccably executed.
  • Beef Tongue: A surprising highlight—tender and bursting with flavor, exceeding our expectations.
  • Wagyu: The star of the evening. This premium beef melted in our mouths, offering an indulgent end to the savory courses.

For dessert, diners can choose between the cheese train, a sweet dessert, or both. After 3.5 hours of dining, we opted for the cold dessert—a refreshing and light conclusion to the meal.

High Standards with a Few Small Quibbles

The quality of the food and the expertise of both the chef and sommelier were undeniable. Each dish was thoughtfully crafted, and the wine pairing elevated the experience further. The only minor drawback was the time between courses, which occasionally felt a bit too long.

A Memorable Experience

Restaurant RJ is a culinary gem on Texel, perfect for those seeking a luxurious dining experience. While it’s best suited for those who enjoy leisurely meals, the flavors, creativity, and attention to detail make it worth every moment.

If you’re planning a visit to Texel and have a love for exceptional food and wine, RJ should absolutely be on your list. We can’t wait to return and savor the experience all over again.
