If you are looking for a serene, peaceful and refreshing escape on the beautiful island of Zanzibar, then I highly recommend visiting the Maalum Nature Reserve. As soon as you step foot on the property, you will be transported to a tranquil oasis. Upon arrival, you will be handed a towel (in case you forgot yours) and led through the stunning gardens to the lockers and natural pool.

Upon arrival, you are greeted with warm hospitality and handed a towel (in case you forgot yours), before being led through the stunning gardens to the lockers and natural pool. The walk through the gardens is an experience in itself, with lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and the sounds of nature all around you. It’s easy to see why this place is a favorite among both locals and tourists alike.

The water in the natural pool is incredibly refreshing, providing the perfect way to cool off on a hot day. The pool is surrounded by plenty of shaded areas for those who prefer to stay out of the sun, as well as some sunny spots for those looking to soak up the rays. One of the most enchanting aspects of the pool is that you can swim with little fish darting around you, adding a magical touch to the experience. The cost to swim in the pool is 40,000 Shillings per person for 1.5 hours, which is a reasonable price considering the unique and serene experience it offers.

The reserve also has an amazing restaurant that serves some of the best and refreshing juices you’ll ever taste. I tried the mango, avocado, and passion fruit juices, and they all tasted incredibly fresh and exactly like the fruit you find on the island. The mango was sweet and juicy, the avocado was rich and nutty, and the passion fruit had a delightful sweet and sour flavor that was incredibly refreshing. These juices are the perfect complement to the peaceful surroundings, and they are sure to leave you feeling revitalized.

In addition to the juices, the food at the restaurant was also incredible. I ordered the tuna tartare with avocado, mango, and toast, which was a unique and flavorful dish that showcased the fresh, local ingredients. The combination of the tender tuna with the creamy avocado and sweet mango was simply divine. We also ordered a tasty burger with fries, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. While the entry fee to the reserve is relatively high, the food and juices are quite affordable, making the overall experience well worth every penny.

The Maalum Nature Reserve is an excellent place to relax and unwind while enjoying the beauty of nature. The reserve’s lush gardens, refreshing natural pool, and delicious food and drinks make it a must-visit spot for anyone visiting Zanzibar. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful escape, a refreshing swim, or simply a place to enjoy a delicious meal surrounded by nature, the Maalum Nature Reserve has something for everyone.

When planning your visit, it’s important to note that during peak season, making a reservation is necessary to ensure you have a spot at this popular destination. We visited in March, so there was almost no one there, allowing us to fully enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the reserve without any crowds. If you’re looking to experience the best of what Zanzibar has to offer, the Maalum Nature Reserve should definitely be on your list of must-visit places.
