Forodhani Food Market | 4.5

The Forodhani night market, located on the waterfront of Zanzibar, is a popular destination for tourists looking for a unique culinary experience. The market has around 15-20 stands, but most of them serve the same items.

Upon arriving at the market, you are greeted by a bustling atmosphere, filled with a variety of aromas and sounds. The vendors, consisting of mostly chefs, compete for your attention as they attempt to take you towards their BBQ stands, which are filled with various meats, seafood, and vegetables.

Unfortunately, while the atmosphere of the Forodhani night market is lively and inviting, the food falls short of expectations. Our experience at the market left us feeling disappointed with the quality of the food, which was dry and flavorless. It seemed as though the chefs were more interested in getting customers to their stands rather than focusing on the quality of the food they were serving.

Additionally, the food at the market was incredibly expensive, especially when compared to the price of similar meals at local restaurants. The cost of ordering a starter, main, and drinks equaled the same amount we would pay for a full meal at a restaurant. While we did not get sick from the food, we felt as though we did not get our money’s worth.

While the market does offer a unique atmosphere and a wide range of food options, the quality of the food and the high prices do not justify the experience. If you are looking for an authentic culinary experience in Zanzibar, we would recommend exploring local restaurants rather than the Forodhani night market.
