Exploring Czech Cuisine at Bohemia Goose in Prague
If you’re looking to try authentic Czech cuisine, Bohemia Goose in Prague offers a broad menu filled with traditional dishes. This spacious restaurant is known for its hearty portions and unique culinary offerings, but our experience came with a mix of highs and lows.
The Food: Flavorful but Heavy
At Bohemia Goose, we indulged in two classic Czech dishes: pork knuckle and goose leg. Both dishes were flavorful, with tender, juicy meat cooked to perfection. However, the portions were enormous, and the meals leaned toward the fatty side, which wasn’t quite to my taste.
The pork knuckle was served with pickled vegetables, a dip, and crunchy pickles—a delightful combination of tangy and savory flavors. The goose leg, on the other hand, came with jus, potato pancakes, red cabbage, sauerkraut, and Czech bread. The sides complemented the meat beautifully, especially the potato pancakes, which added a crispy texture to the dish, even though this one was also very greasy.
We also tried a goose and duck spread served with bread, which was a fun and unique appetizer. It gave us a chance to explore a different side of Czech flavors. While the food was affordable and perfect for sharing, the portion sizes were overwhelming for one person. If you visit, consider sharing a dish to avoid food waste and enjoy a variety of flavors.
Drinks: House-Brewed Beers
Bohemia Goose serves its own house-brewed beers, which paired wonderfully with the rich and hearty meals. The beers added a refreshing touch and were a highlight of our dining experience.
The Ambiance: Touristy but Spacious
The restaurant itself is huge and clearly caters to tourists. While it may not have the charm of a small, authentic Czech eatery, it’s still an interesting place to visit if you’re looking to try traditional dishes in a large, bustling setting.
The Service: A Disappointment
Unfortunately, the service didn’t match the quality of the food. Upon arrival, we were asked if we had a reservation, which we did. However, the staff struggled to locate it, and their attitude left much to be desired. After showing proof of our booking, the waitress eventually found it but walked away without explaining or acknowledging us further.
Once seated, we barely had time to look at the menu before a staff member returned, clearly impatient, to take our order. Their hurried demeanor was surprising, especially since the restaurant wasn’t busy at the time, it was even almost empty. The lack of friendliness and attention made us feel unwelcome, which dampened the overall experience.
Final Thoughts
While our visit to Bohemia Goose was a mixed bag, I’m glad we got to try some traditional Czech dishes. The food is affordable, flavorful, and perfect for those with a big appetite or a group looking to share. However, the unfriendly service and touristy vibe might make you think twice about returning.
If you decide to visit, I recommend going with a group, sharing a few dishes, and enjoying their house-brewed beers. Despite the flaws, it’s a good spot to explore Czech flavors and try something new.
