Big Black Cook | 8.8

When you think of Paris, your mind likely goes to croissants, baguettes, and French cuisine. But if you’re looking to switch things up and crave a taste of the Caribbean, Big Black Cook is a must-visit. Located in the heart of Paris, this small but vibrant restaurant offers some of the best Caribbean food I’ve had, and their chicken burgers are truly out of this world.

We found this gem thanks to a recommendation from a colleague, and I can confidently say it was one of the best meals I had during my trip to Paris.

A Chicken Burger to Remember

Let’s start with the highlight of the menu: the jerk chicken burger. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s everything you could ever want in a burger. The chicken was perfectly cooked—juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and packed with bold flavors. The seasoning was just right, with the jerk spices giving it a deliciously spicy kick without overpowering the other flavors. The bun was soft, and the sauce had the perfect balance of creaminess and tang to complement the chicken.

I’ve had a lot of chicken burgers in my life, but this one truly stands out. Every bite was bursting with flavor, and the textures were spot on. It’s not often you find a burger that nails every element, but Big Black Cook managed to do it.

The Jerk Chicken Plate

If you’re more of a fan of meals than burgers, you won’t be disappointed either. I also tried the jerk chicken meal, and while it didn’t quite reach the heights of the burger, it was still incredibly satisfying. The jerk chicken here was slightly less juicy than the burger version, but still tender and full of that signature Caribbean flavor. The dish came with perfectly cooked rice and a refreshing coleslaw, which provided a nice contrast to the spiciness of the chicken.

While I preferred the burger overall, the jerk chicken meal was still delicious and a great option if you’re looking for a heartier plate.

Small Space, Big Flavor

One of the things I loved about Big Black Cook was its cozy and laid-back vibe. The restaurant is small, with just a few tables and a little terrace, but it has a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. During the summer, the big windows open up fully, allowing for an indoor-outdoor dining experience. Whether you’re sitting inside or outside, the space feels relaxed and perfect for a casual meal.

The service was just as warm and friendly as the atmosphere. The staff made sure we were well taken care of, and the food came out quickly, which is always a plus when you’re hungry.

A Flavorful Homemade Drink

In addition to their standout food, Big Black Cook also offers a homemade drink that was one of the most flavorful beverages I’ve ever had. It was refreshing, packed with tropical flavors, and a great complement to the bold, spicy food. It’s definitely worth trying if you visit.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Big Black Cook is a hidden gem in Paris that offers a delicious Caribbean twist on classic comfort food. The jerk chicken burger is hands down one of the best chicken burgers I’ve ever eaten, and the jerk chicken meal, while slightly less perfect, is still a flavorful and satisfying choice. The friendly service, cozy atmosphere, and quick turnaround make it a great spot for a casual yet memorable meal.

If you’re in Paris and looking for something different from the usual French fare, I highly recommend giving Big Black Cook a try. You won’t be disappointed!
