Hokkai Kitchen: A Seafood Paradise in IJmuiden
If you’re a seafood lover looking for incredibly fresh fish and unique Japanese-inspired dishes, Hokkai Kitchen in IJmuiden is a must-visit. Tucked in the heart of the IJmuiden harbor, this restaurant has earned a reputation for serving some of the freshest seafood in the area. After hearing glowing reviews, we finally made our way there—and it did not disappoint. From high-quality sushi to lesser-known delicacies, Hokkai Kitchen offers a seafood experience unlike any other.
A Journey Through Fresh and Unique Flavors
One of the highlights of our meal was the tuna belly, something we’d been eager to try for a while. For me it felled like it is the “Wagyu of the sea,” since it was practically melting in our mouths. Its delicate texture and rich, buttery flavor made it an unforgettable dish that’s well worth a try for anyone who appreciates premium seafood.
Another intriguing item on the menu was the uni—sea urchin. The staff told us this was a rare and special item, so we couldn’t pass up the chance to sample it. Surprisingly, each piece had a slightly different taste, though they looked identical. This variance added to the excitement, making uni a memorable culinary experience that felt both luxurious and adventurous. I’m not 100% sure if I really liked the flavor, but it was so unique I cannot name anything that tastes similar.
Exploring the Variety: From King Fish to Takoyaki
Hokkai Kitchen’s extensive menu allowed us to explore a range of flavors, from king fish to seabass and salmon, all served at peak freshness. Each piece was expertly crafted and left us savoring the delicate, natural flavors of the fish.
In addition to sushi, we couldn’t resist trying some of the warm dishes that showcased unique Japanese flavors. The fried mackerel, witch felt a bit like a Dutch kibbeling but with a mackerel twist, was a delightful take on fried fish. We also enjoyed cod in miso sauce, a savory and comforting dish that became an instant favorite. And for an extra touch of fun, we tried takoyaki, or octopus balls—a classic Japanese street food that brought some playful flavor to the meal.
A Fresh Take on Dining
One thing that sets Hokkai Kitchen apart is its unique setting and dining style. The restaurant looks a bit like a fabrique, with a simple, industrial design and an open kitchen that lets you watch the chefs in action. This layout adds to the authenticity of the experience, making you feel like you’re right in the heart of a bustling fish market.
A note for first-timers: Hokkai Kitchen has a dining structure where you’re required to order all your food at once, as there is a 1.5-hour dining limit. This approach allows the kitchen to serve dishes in rounds, giving you the opportunity to sample everything fresh from the kitchen, but be sure to plan your order in advance to make the most of your time.
Perfect for Both Seafood Aficionados and Newcomers
One of the pleasant surprises of our visit was that even my boyfriend, who isn’t typically a fan of fish, but still wanted to give it a try, enjoyed most of the dishes. The unparalleled freshness of the seafood and the skillful preparation made the flavors accessible and enjoyable for even the most skeptical fish eaters.
Final Thoughts
Hokkai Kitchen truly delivered an exceptional dining experience. With its high-quality, fresh seafood and unique selection of Japanese-inspired dishes, it’s no wonder this restaurant has gained a loyal following. Whether you’re a seasoned seafood enthusiast or just looking to try something new, Hokkai Kitchen is sure to impress.
We left feeling incredibly satisfied and can’t wait to return to explore more of their menu. If you’re in IJmuiden or planning a day trip, be sure to visit Hokkai Kitchen for a taste of some of the freshest seafood around. For the quality, in my opinion, it wasn’t expensive at all.
