Rayleigh & Ramsey | 8.4

Amsterdam is a city known for its eclectic dining experiences and vibrant wine culture, and Rayleigh & Ramsey on Van Woustraat is a testament to that. Despite a hiccup with their Westerpark location, which was unexpectedly closed due to staff illness, our visit to their Van Woustraat venue turned out to be a delightful journey through a world of wines.

A Slight Detour Leads to a Hidden Gem

Our original plan was to visit Rayleigh & Ramsey in Westerpark, which according to Google Maps would be open. Upon arrival, however, it turned out to be closed. A quick phone call to their other location on Van Woustraat brought clarity: due to illness, the Westerpark location was temporarily closed and their opening days had changed. They acknowledged that this was misstated on Google Maps and assured us that they would update it soon.

Determined not to let this setback ruin our day, we headed to Van Woustraat. This turned out to have been a good decision,

Warm Welcome and a Wine Wonderland

The service at Van Woustraat was exceptional from the moment we walked in. We were greeted warmly and given a comprehensive explanation of how everything worked. The highlight here is their impressive selection of 100 different wines, each with unique tones and flavors.

Food: A Mixed Bag of Quality

The food at Rayleigh & Ramsey was a bit of a hit-and-miss affair. Here’s a breakdown of what we tried:

  • Cheeseboard: The cheeses were of good quality, offering a variety of flavors that paired well with the wines.
  • Oysters: Exceptionally fresh and tasty, the oysters were a highlight.
  • Patatas Bravas: These were well-prepared and flavorful, a solid choice for a snack.
  • Redfish: While tasty, the quality of the redfish was not the best.
  • Steak: Unfortunately, the steak was tough and not of great quality.
  • Burrata: This dish was disappointing as the burrata lacked the creamy texture one expects from this cheese.

Wines: A Journey of Flavors

The wine selection truly set Rayleigh & Ramsey apart. They offer a unique tasting experience where you can choose between a sip, half a glass, or a full glass. Some standout options included:

  • White Wine from Blue Grapes: A rare find that piqued our interest.
  • Wine Aged Under the Sea: This offered a unique flavor profile, making it a memorable choice.
  • Special Selections: The variety was impressive, with each wine offering something distinct.

The wines we sampled were excellent, and the ability to try them in different quantities allowed us to explore more without overcommitting to a full glass of each.

Service: Attentive and Knowledgeable

The service at Rayleigh & Ramsey on Van Woustraat was consistently attentive. The staff were knowledgeable about their extensive wine list and eager to make recommendations based on our preferences. This made the experience even more enjoyable, as we could learn more about the wines and the stories behind them.

Final Thoughts: A Must-Visit for Wine Enthusiasts

Rayleigh & Ramsey on Van Woustraat is a must-visit spot for wine lovers in Amsterdam. Despite the initial inconvenience with the Westerpark location, the Van Woustraat venue more than made up for it with its welcoming atmosphere, exceptional service, and extensive wine selection. While the food quality was inconsistent, the overall experience, especially for wine enthusiasts, was thoroughly enjoyable.

If you’re looking to explore a wide variety of wines and enjoy a relaxed evening with knowledgeable staff, Rayleigh & Ramsey is the place to be. Just make sure to call ahead to confirm their opening hours, especially if you’re planning to visit the Westerpark location.
