8 x activities on Zanzibar

Zanzibar is renowned for its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters, but there’s much more to discover beyond the popular tourist spots. Join us as we explore the hidden gems of Zanzibar, from gorgeous beaches and natural pools to thrilling adventures and mouthwatering local cuisine.

  1. Discover their gorgeous beaches: While Nungwi Beach is a popular tourist destination, we found Dongwe Beach and Mtende Beach to be hidden gems worth visiting. Dongwe Beach boasts crystal-blue waters and white sands reminiscent of the Maldives. Don’t miss the Dongwe Beach Restaurant, accessible via a scenic bridge, where you can enjoy stunning views and access the beautiful Blue Lagoon. Mtende Beach, though requiring a small entrance fee, offers a serene and picturesque setting with two delightful beachside restaurants.
  2. Experience Maalum Natural Swimming Pool: Escape to Maalum, a unique natural swimming pool in Paje. Reconnect with nature as you explore the underground life and unwind in the refreshing pool. Reserve a 1.5-hour time block to enjoy a peaceful experience away from the crowds. Afterward, treat yourself to the best fruit juices you’ll ever taste at the on-site garden restaurant, with the passionfruit juice being a standout favorite.
  3. Rent a Scooter and Explore: For a thrilling adventure, rent a scooter near Paje and embark on an exploration of the villages and hidden gems. A day’s scooter rental costs $20, and obtaining a driver’s license is necessary (if you possess a valid license). With your scooter, you can freely navigate the beautiful surroundings and discover the authentic charm of Zanzibar. Remember to prioritize safety and avoid renting a scooter in Zanzibar City.
  4. Enjoy a Sunrise Boat Tour: While a dolphin sunrise tour may not be recommended due to the aggressive approach towards the dolphins, opt instead for a sunrise boat tour. Witness the breathtaking sunrise as you sail through the calm waters of Zanzibar. Immerse yourself in the tranquil ambiance and admire the beauty of the coastline as the sun paints the sky with vibrant hues.
  5. Embark on a Quad Tour: Book a quad tour to venture into the countryside and witness the local way of life. We encountered joyful children in poor villages, singing and clapping their hands upon seeing us. Our guide explained that tourists often provide them with food and candy, which explains their excitement. It’s a humbling experience that highlights the disparities and reminds us of the privilege we often take for granted. While visiting the villages your free to buy them food and drinks from their local supermarket.
  6. Delight in Local Cuisine: For an authentic culinary experience, explore the local food scene near Paje. The Stone Culture Restaurant, Banana Restaurant, and Pishi offer fresh, affordable meals served with warm hospitality. However, if you’re craving a change, the Bento Paje Foodcourt provides a variety of international cuisines, allowing you to enjoy flavors from around the world in a vibrant and atmospheric setting.
  7. Visit Kuza Kave: Discover the refreshing Kuza Kave, a natural pool nestled within a cave. Immerse yourself in the invigorating waters, which are naturally cleansed by the tides. Afterward, consider participating in a cooking or music class for an immersive cultural experience.
  8. Experience the Bento Paje Foodcourt: If you’re seeking a break from local cuisine, head to the Bento Paje Foodcourt. This lively establishment offers various restaurant options and a relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy your meal while taking in the stunning views from the terrace.

Zanzibar offers more than just stunning beaches; it presents a treasure trove of hidden gems and unforgettable experiences. From their gorgeous beaches and natural pools to thrilling adventures and tantalizing cuisine, this tropical paradise has something for everyone.
